Eric Semler Calls for Viant Technology to Adopt Bitcoin Treasury Strategy Amid Stock Troubles

In an article published on X, Semler pointed out Viant's remaining stock performance and large cash reserves as signs that the company has "matured" for a bold strategic change. While Viant's shares have fallen by 44% since the IPO in 2021, a sharp 50% drop in just February has raised investors' concerns about the long-term growth trajectory.

Despite the pessimism in the market, Viant continues to be financially healthy. The company holds $205 million in net cash, which constitutes approximately 25% of its $900 million market value, and generated $34 million in free cash flow in 2024, forecasting stable growth at least until 2028.

Semler, which recently led the transition to Bitcoin as a treasure asset at Semler Scientific, labeled Viant as part of what it calls the "Zombie Zone" along with Zoom Communications (ZOOM) and Coursera (COUR): companies with unused capital and uncertain strategic direction. Neither Zoom nor Coursera has heeded previous calls for the adoption of Bitcoin.

Viant, founded by the Vanderhook brothers, has already started to show interest in the crypto space. Co-founder Chris Vanderhook has previously supported decentralized technologies, highlighting blockchain, NFTs, and crypto as critical for what he calls the "New Open Web."

Viant is also facing increasing competitive pressure from industry giants like Google and Amazon, which continue to strengthen their power in the digital advertising ecosystem. Meanwhile, the commoditization of demand-side platforms has further challenged mid-sized players like Viant.

Semler argues that turning to Bitcoin could help differentiate Viant from its competitors and provide a hedge against inflation and monetary instability.
